SAFESPACESHIP is a production trio consisting of multi-instrumentalists, Chino DeVilla, Ben MacDonald and Scott McCannell.

 

Staples of the Toronto musical community, they met while studying at Humber College. Over the years they worked together on many projects but it wasn’t until the Pandemic hit and they found themselves locked down in a house across the street from Trinity Bellwoods Park that SAFESPACESHIP became a reality. With tours canceled, no live shows, and a house full of instruments, they found themselves in the perfect position to craft their own unique sound. Inspired by and indebted to classic Soul Music, the golden age of Hip Hop and the improvisation of Jazz, SAFESPACESHIP’S sound can span the gamut of groove based music. Big drums and big bass combined with a soft spot for lush harmony and an appreciation for the strange.

 

The trio has produced music for Lydia Persaud, Ahprose, Kyla Charter, Claire Davis, Tanika Charles, Kristina Alcordo, The Airplane Boys, and Mandela Eskia among others. Between them, to name just a few, they have individually worked with the likes of Jesse Reyes, Charlotte Day Wilson, Matt Burnett, Adrian Bent, Kount Koal, Junia T, RVRS, Aline Morales, Vapor RMG and The Nathaniel Dett Chorale
